SUMMARY:Lama Chopa Tsok Feast
DESCRIPTION:Among the most profound of Tibetan Buddhist ritual ceremonies is the Lama Chopa Tsok Feast Offering. It is a ceremony of prayer\, chanting\, music\, meditation and a ritual feast. It contains all of the points of the Lamrim meditation on guru devotion\, presented in a way that directly appeals to our senses and emotions. The more devotion we have to our teacher\, the more there is the wish to make offerings to him\, and the Lama Chopa ceremony creates the opportunity for making many kinds of offering – food\, drink\, lights\, incense\, music\, and the best form of offering to the Guru\, which is the offering of practice itself; in this case the practice of doing the chanting\, visualizations and prayers of the first part of the ceremony and the meditation on the Lamrim which forms the second part of the ritual. And since the guru is the highest object of offering\, the merit created is enormous. Please RSVP Zehra Conner at 299-1083 if you wish to attend this event.\nPlease bring a small dish of “finger food” to share!

SUMMARY:Chandrakirti's Introduction to the Middle Way
DESCRIPTION:Chandrakirti’s Madhyamakavatara (Introduction to the Middle Way) is an extremely influential text of Mahayana Buddhism. It is an introduction to the Madhyamika (middleway) teachings of Nargarjuna\, which are themselves a systematization of the Perfection of Wisdom literature\, the sutras on the crucial but elusive concept of emptiness. Chandrakirti is one of several Indian scholars whose treatises were brought to Tibet and whose realized teachings about the nature of the mind are the foundation of Tibetan Buddhist thought. Hidden in his verses are the guideposts to enlightenment. The Madhyamakavatara\, Chandrakirti’s Entering the Middle Way\, is one of the key philosophical expositions of emptiness\, and its study has been an essential part of Buddhist training in Tibet for many centuries. Though not very long\, the text contains complex and subtle arguments in a condensed form. Study of this text leads to an understanding of great compassion and how it serves as a cause for generating the mind of enlightenment(bodhichitta). This text also sets out the various levels through which one proceeds to the attainment of the completion of all ten perfections and enlightenment. \n Tucson Odd Fellows Hall 1150 N. SUMMARY:2nd Annual Amitayus Long-Life Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Being born as a human being is considered extremely precious\, as it is the best platform for spiritual practice. Only humans have the right amount of suffering ó our inspiration toward religion ó and the leisure with which to pursue that path. The human birth\, used correctly\, becomes a tool that benefits both self and all others. Through relying on Buddha Amitayus\, we can be protected from untimely death and increase our life span\, allowing us to make full use of the opportunity now at hand\, i.e.\, our human body. Moreover\, the practice of Amitayus itself becomes a means to make meaningful this human existence. \n Amitayus practice is traditionally done at the beginning of the preliminary practices (Ngˆndro)\, as insurance that the practitioner will live to complete their full commitment. It is also accumulated at the start of any long retreat. This particular Amitayus practice\, called Drupay Gyalmoís Longevity Practice\, is an important practice for the Drikung lineage\, which traces it to a great Indian dakini (Machik Drupay Gyalmo) who taught it to Rechungpa (one of Milarepaís main disciples). This is a wonderful opportunity for practitioners to practice together in a traditional\, intensive and intimate retreat setting with an accomplished master. \n This five-day closed retreat is our second annual fall retreat\, and registration is limited to 25 persons. The retreat will begin on Friday evening with an empowerment ceremony\, and be followed by five days of meditation and instruction. As this retreat is closed\, pre-registration is required\, and attendees will need to remain on-site throughout the retreat. Led by Drupon Thinley Nyingpo Rinpoche\, this retreat will be held at our sister center\, Garchen Buddhist Institute\, in the tranquil high-desert surrounds of Chino Valley\, Arizona\, four hours North of Tucson.\nRetreat Fees\n$375.
