SUMMARY:Manjushri-Yamantaka Teaching & Meditation Practice
DESCRIPTION:His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche offered his students the following advice: “What is the main reason we practice Yamantaka? It is contained in the phrase\, “Let the destructiveness of sorcerers\, their gods and protectors descend upon themselves\,” which we find in the retreat text. What this means is that when you have loving kindness\, compassion and Bodhicitta\, any harm directed at you will fall back on itself. This is the root of the matter. Why does this happen? Because here your mind is clean and pure. When you are meditating on loving-kindness and compassion for all\, then you have no ego-clinging. Without ego-clinging\, nothing can harm you. So through Yamantaka we meditate on compassion for all sentient beings and nothing “curses\, sorcery or whatever can harm us. If you understand this then you understand all there is to know about Yamantaka retreat practice.” \nThurs: 7-9pm Chanting the Names of Manjushri\nFri: 9-5pm Teaching on Manjushri-Yamantaka Retreat\nSat: 9-5pm Manjushri-Yamantaka Meditation\nSun: 9-4pm Manjushri-Yamantaka Meditation\nSun: 4-5:30pm Rinchen Phuntsok Smoke Offering and Tsok\nFri-Sun: 8-9am Lama Chopa (Guru Yoga) Meditation \nNote:Yamantaka Empowerment from Garchen Rinpoche is required to participate in all activities except Thursday evening and the morning Lama Chopa practice. \nLocation: 3935 N. In other words\, it is a courageous mind that can be a primary source of peace and harmony for every sentient being. This courage characterizes a sattvika\, the combined embodiment of compassion and great wisdom. This kind of warrior has an indomitable courage that cannot be overwhelmed by disturbing emotions. We practice this sadhana\, in order to cultivate these qualities within ourselves.\n\nIf you have any further questions\, please contact Matthew at matthew@drikungkagyutucson.org or call 884-0554.\nAs a courtesy to those with allergies\, please refrain from wearing perfume. SUMMARY:Vajrasattva Meditation Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The retreat will be led by retreat master Drupon Rinpoche in the spacious and rolling grasslands of Sonoita\, AZ. We will be focusing on Vajrasattva purification practice from the preliminary practices of the incomparable Drikung Kagyu. \nVajrasattva meditation is a special practice for the purification of non-virtuous causes. Non-virtue follows us like a shadow\, life after life and becomes the source of all sufferings. Therefore\, it is very wise to purify all non-virtues we create before they come to fruition. \nIn this purification practice we use the four powers of remorse\, resolve\, antidote and reliance. This in-turn prepares us to progress along the path of enlightenment. \nWe are privileged to have Venerable Drupon Rinchen Dorje Rinpoche\, current three-year retreat master at Garchen Institute\, to bestow the empowerment\, teach and guide us in a retreat setting. The retreat begins Friday at 7:00am and ends on Sunday at 5:00pm. There will be a Vajrasattva empowerment ceremony Saturday morning at 9:00am. The empowerment is recommended but not required to participate in this retreat.

SUMMARY:Sutra Mahamudra: Teachings\, Contemplations & Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Sutra Mahamudra: Teachings\, Contemplations & Meditations reveals that the nature of our body\, speech and mind is primordial wakefulness – similar to the deep blue of the Tucson sky revealed after a passing Summer monsoon. This primordial wakefulness is what is called Buddhahood or Enlightenment and it is inherent within all sentient beings. The practice of Sutra Mahamudra essentially involves the study and contemplation of particular texts\, followed by meditation.\nWe contemplate the teachings on emptiness or shunyata\,as well as the teachings on buddha nature – our fundamental wakefulness. Through this process\, we discover the heart of enlightenment.\nPlease bring: The Jewel Ornament of Liberation (Gampopa)\, Buddha Nature\, Uttaratantra Shastra (Maitreya) and Introduction to the Middleway\, Madhyamakavatara (Chandrakirti). It is not necessary to purchase these texts to participate in these teachings. These books however are available in our bookstore or you may share some of our libraryís loaner copies. \nLocation:\nMatthew and Rachel’s House\n3935 N. Country Club Road\, #36A\nTucson\, Arizona 85716\n\nDirections: \nï N on Country Club Rd past Grant\, Ft.Lowell and Prince Rds\nï Left at Racquet Club Ranch #3935\, before Tucson Racquet & Fitness\nï Pass 1st drive on right. SUMMARY:Natural Liberation: Padmasambhava's Teachings on the Six Bardos
DESCRIPTION:Event Day and TimesFriday\, 6/11\, 7-9pm\, and Saturday/Sunday\, 6/12-13\, 9am-5pm \nNatural Liberation\, Padmasambhava’s Teachings on the Six Bardos provide extensive instruction on each of the six transitional processes\, or bardos\, that make up our experience in samsara.\nThis event continues from Traga Rinpoche’s prior teachings in January\, February and June 2009\, and January 2010. This teaching will conclude Traga’s commentary on Natural Liberation.\nThese teachings contain methods for naturally\, or spontaneously\, liberating ourselves from the sufferings that are inherent in each of the six realms so we can obtain ultimate liberation.\n\n“The transitional process from the time we are born until the time we die is crucial in determining whether we will go up or down.”\n“With a human incarnation\, we possess greater power than other beings to bring about good\, but also greater power to bring about bad. We have the ability to know and to understand\, and we must make best use of the favorable conditions of a human incarnation.”\n“We must not meaninglessly waste this opportunity. If we conduct ourselves well in\nour life\, then later\, as we approach death (in the Bardo)\, and in our next life\, we will go further and further up. There is no doubt about this.”\n“Otherwise\, we will suffer great fear and pain as we die\, our minds will suffer agony and despair\, and (due to our ignorance) we will not recognize the Bardo of Becoming. The purpose of the Six Bardos teachings is to profoundly move us to engage in practice during the Bardo of Living.”\n Traga Rinpoche\n\nOf all the methods taught by Buddha Shakyamuni to achieve enlightenment\, the methods of Mahamudra and Dzogchen provide us the most profound view – that of the mind’s true nature. Traga Rinpoche will also present an overview of these two methods and clarify for us the differences and similarities inherent in them.\n\nAn excellent book on these teachings is Natural Liberation: Padmasambhava’s Teachings on the Six Bardos\, with commentary by Gyatrul Rinpoche and translation by B. Alan Wallace (Wisdom Publications\, 1997).\n\nWe are once again very fortunate to be receiving these profound teachings from The Venerable Traga Rinpoche.\n \n\n1871 N. DESCRIPTION:Weekend Teaching Schedule:(You may attend any or all sessions)\n\nFriday\, 3/19\, 1-5pm\nThe Six Paramitas: Walking the Bodhisattva’s Path to Enlightenment\n \n\nThe 6 paramitas (or perfections) include generosity\, moral ethics\, patience\, perseverance\, meditative concentration\, and wisdom. function as simple\, practical and enlightening guidance on how to live our lives on and off the meditation cushion in a way that purifies disturbing emotions and negative karma into virtuous activity. Lama-la has suggested that we bring our Jewel Ornament of Liberation text to this teaching.\nPlease bring your copies of The Jewel Ornament of Liberation with you. \nFriday\, 3/19\, 7-9pm\nIntroduction to Meditating on Emptiness: Wisdom-Awareness\n \n\nEmptiness meditation is likened to the experience of pouring water into water or stirring butter into butter. When one learns to abide in the inherently natural state of wisdom-awareness the paramitas manifest spontaneously in one’s day to day actions\, like breast milk passing from mother to babe. Lamala will introduce us to emptiness-awareness meditation practice and if we’re lucky – it’s result! \nSaturday\, 3/20\, 9am-12pm\, & 2-5pm\nLight Amassment of Blessings: Guru Yoga Teachings & Group Meditation Practice\n \n\nGuru Yoga is the practice of merging one’s mind with the wisdom mind of the teacher. This very special Guru Yoga sadhana was transmitted by Garchen Rinpoche just a few years ago and written down by Lama Gabe for Rinpoche’s disciples\, after a very persistent student made supplications to him. \nSunday\, 3/21\, 9am-12pm & 2-5pm\nWhite Dzambhala Empowerment: Summoning Good Fortune \nTeachings & Group Meditation Practice \n\nDzambhala Diety is considered a master of longevity\, merit\, nourishment\, riches & fortune. SUMMARY:Natural Liberation: Padmasambhava's Teachings on the Six Bardos
DESCRIPTION:Event Day and TimesFriday\, 1/22\, 7-9pm\, and Saturday/Sunday\, 1/23-24\, 9am-5pm \nNatural Liberation\, Padmasambhava’s Teachings on the Six Bardos provide extensive instruction on each of the six transitional processes\, or bardos\, that make up our experience in samsara.\nThis event continues from Traga Rinpoche’s prior teachings in June 2009.\nThese teachings contain methods for naturally\, or spontaneously\, liberating ourselves from the sufferings that are inherent in each of the six realms so we can obtain ultimate liberation.\n\n“The transitional process from the time we are born until the time we die is crucial in determining whether we will go up or down.”\n“With a human incarnation\, we possess greater power than other beings to bring about good\, but also greater power to bring about bad. SUMMARY:The Prayer of Kungtuzangpo
DESCRIPTION:The Prayer of Kungtuzangpo (Tibetan)\, also known as the Primordial Buddha Samantabhadra (Sanskrit) instructs the sincere student about the View\, Meditation and Action of the Nature of Mind and how we stray from this Unchanging Goodness in our day to day lives.\nThis aspirational prayer from the Dzogchen Ati Yoga Tantras comes from Guru Rinpoche\, Padmasmbhava. It is from the 9th chapter of the Gonpa Zangthal or Northern Treasures\, a secret treasure or terma discovered in 1366 by the Great\nAwareness-Holder and terton\, Rigdzin Goden in the cave of Zangzang Lhadrak in Tibet. \n \n Benedictine Convent\n800 N.Country Club\nTucson AZ 85716

SUMMARY:Shitro Empowerment\, Lung & Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Shitro translates as peaceful and wrathful deities and is associated with purification of the skandhas or aggregates of form\, perception\, feeling\, mental formations and consciousness. At the moment of our death these aggregates dissolve into their pure and impure qualities\, and may be experienced as dream-like imagery or visions. \nIn the practice of Shitro\, we learn to recognize this\, so that as we transmigrate through the intermediate state after death\, weíre not propelled by karmic propensities into lower rebirths. Rather\, weíre able to abide in the Nature of Mind. This journey of compounded and uncompounded awareness is the central theme in the Prayer of Kungtuzangpo.\n\nThis Shitro Empowerment\, Lung\, and Teaching will be held on Friday afternoon\, 12/4 from 2-6pm at the Benedictine Convent. This event is associated with the following weekend’s teaching on the Prayer of Kungtuzangpo.\n\n \n Benedictine Convent\n800 N.Country Club\nTucson AZ 85716

SUMMARY:Progressing Along the Path - Refuge Teachings
DESCRIPTION:Refuge is considered the foundation of the path to liberation\, the basis of all vows\, the source of all enlightened qualities and the point of differentiation between buddhists and non-buddhists. Together with generating Bodhichitta\, it forms the foundation for accomplishing the level of complete enlightenment and the source of all that is positive in existence and peace. \nRefuge is one of the preliminaries to Mahamudra practice and is the second in a series of teachings from Drupon Rinchen Dorje. Drupon Dorje will be teaching Refuge from the Jewel Ornament of Liberation. This teaching is open to all levels of practitioners and beginners are welcome. \nOur own Khenpo Sherab Ozer Rinpoche has encouraged us to seek guidance from Drupon Dorje with respect to Mahamudra practice and Drupon Dorje has graciously agreed to teach the stages of the path. † \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:Achi Empowerment and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Achi is one of the protectors of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage\, but she actually protects all beings from harm. Achi was the grandmother of Lod Jigten Sumgon\, the founder of the Drikung Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. She is like a mother\, who loves her students fiercely and will do anything to protect them – so that the Dharma\, especially the Drikung Kagyu – will flourish. \nAchi’s blessing are said to be extremely quick and her practice is done daily in virtually every Drikung Lineage monastery both inside and outside of Tibet. Individuals who practice Achi and recite her mantra are certain to be protected from obstacles and hindrances\, especially hindrances to their Dharma practice. \nAn Empowerment is offered on Saturday\, Sept 26th\, followed by practice sessions for the rest of the week end. This particular practice was written by Jigten Sumgon\, our lineageís founder\, and translated in to English by Khenchen Gyaltsen Rinpoche. \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:Guru Yoga and Permissions & Prohibitions Teaching
DESCRIPTION:“A Guru Yoga that Brings the Dharmakaya onto the Path\,î is a practice of profound meaning and rich with blessing for the modern regular practitioner with limited time. The practice of guru yoga\, merging with the mind of the master\, lies at the very heart of the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition.\n“The practice of guru yoga\, merging with the mind of the master\, lies at the very heart of the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition of Tibet. Through the guru yoga practice\, all obstacles can be removed and all blessings received. With the help of the outer teacher\, we can discover the inner teacher\, the true nature of our own mind. If we wish to progress towards enlightenment\, we need the guidance of a qualified master\, while we seek to rid ourselves of ignorance and free ourselves from the tyranny of ego. The hallmark of the guru yoga practice\, in fact the very practice itself\, is a lucid\, pure and intelligent devotion.”\n\nìPermissions and Prohibitions: Their Mode of Abidingî gives pith advice on ìwhat is to be practiced and what is not\, in accordance with causalityís mode of abiding.î Khenchen Gyaltsen wrote this text on July 4\, 2008\, at Drigung Drenshe Ling in Germany\, and will be providing commentary on its meaning.\n\nKhenchen Gyaltsen Rinpoche will be returning to his students in Tucson. It is very rare to meet a Lama with such extensive training in Buddhist philosophy and such profound meditation experience. In addition\, Rinpoche’s complete fluency in English makes him exceptionally capable of communicating the profound meaning of the teachings. \n \n Benedictine Convent\n800 N.Country Club\nTucson AZ 85716

SUMMARY:Natural Liberation: Padmasambhava's Teachings on the Six Bardos
DESCRIPTION:Event Day and TimesFridays 6/5 and 6/12\, 7-9pm\, and Saturdays/Sundays\, 6/6-7 and 6/13-14\, 9am-5pm \nNatural Liberation\, Padmasambhava’s Teachings on the Six Bardos provide extensive instruction on each of the six transitional processes\, or bardos\, that make up our experience in samsara.\nThis event continues from Traga Rinpoche’s prior teachings in January/February 2009.\nThese teachings contain methods for naturally\, or spontaneously\, liberating ourselves from the sufferings that are inherent in each of the six realms so we can obtain ultimate liberation.\n\n“The transitional process from the time we are born until the time we die is crucial in determining whether we will go up or down.”\n“With a human incarnation\, we possess greater power than other beings to bring about good\, but also greater power to bring about bad. The purpose of the Six Bardos teachings is to profoundly move us to engage in practice during the Bardo of Living.”\nTraga Rinpoche\n\nOf all the methods taught by Buddha Shakyamuni to achieve enlightenment\, the methods of Mahamudra and Dzogchen provide us the most profound view – that of the mind’s true nature.
