SUMMARY:Maintaining Mindfulness in Daily Life
DESCRIPTION:We may experience many things when practicing meditation. An openness\, a feeling of connection\, thankfulness\, peace\, bliss\, clarity\, and compassion are just a few of the benefits of meditation. However\, very often\, the sense of peace we feel is lost after we rise from meditating to resume our busy western lives. To fully realize the benefits of our meditation\, it’s important that we learn and practice mindfulness when we leave our cushion. During this weekend teaching\, the venerable Traga Rinpoche from Garchen Buddhist Institute will guide us with his common sense wisdom and sage advice in strengthening and maintaining a sense of clarity\, compassion and peacefulness in our daily lives.(Click here to download a teaching flyer.)(Click here to register.) \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:Chandrakirti's Introduction to the Middle Way
DESCRIPTION:Chandrakirti’s Madhyamakavatara (Introduction to the Middle Way) is an extremely influential text of Mahayana Buddhism. It is an introduction to the Madhyamika (middleway) teachings of Nargarjuna\, which are themselves a systematization of the Perfection of Wisdom literature\, the sutras on the crucial but elusive concept of emptiness. Chandrakirti is one of several Indian scholars whose treatises were brought to Tibet and whose realized teachings about the nature of the mind are the foundation of Tibetan Buddhist thought. Hidden in his verses are the guideposts to enlightenment. The Madhyamakavatara\, Chandrakirti’s Entering the Middle Way\, is one of the key philosophical expositions of emptiness\, and its study has been an essential part of Buddhist training in Tibet for many centuries. Though not very long\, the text contains complex and subtle arguments in a condensed form. Study of this text leads to an understanding of great compassion and how it serves as a cause for generating the mind of enlightenment(bodhichitta). This text also sets out the various levels through which one proceeds to the attainment of the completion of all ten perfections and enlightenment. \n 1871 N. SUMMARY:Bardo Teaching
DESCRIPTION:The Tibetan word bardo means ìintermediate stateî or a transitional experience between one state of being and another. The study and practice of the bardo in general enables beings to enter the path of liberation\, and in particular is useful to those who fear suffering at the time of death. If one can practice the bardo\, one will experience the Dharma-as-Such without obscuration\, and the clear Mind-as-Such. Then\, one can approach the moment of death with joy and confidence.– His Holiness\, Chetsang Rinpoche. \nTraditionally\, there are six bardo states known as the bardo of this life; the bardo of meditation; the bardo of dreaming; the bardo of dying; the bardo of dharmata (after death) and the bardo of becoming (rebirth).\nWhen seen clearly\, oneís experience of the bardos present remarkable opportunities from life-through-rebirth\, to practice transforming our negative karmic propensities into virtuous ones and thereby relieve suffering. \n \n 1871 N. SUMMARY:Calm Abiding Meditation Teaching
DESCRIPTION:ìCalm Abidingî is the foundation of all meditation practices. In Tibetan\, Calm Abiding is referred to as ìShineî (sheh-ney)\, and in Sanskrit as ìShamathaî (shah-muh-tah). By learning this simple meditation practice\, one establishes the basis for all other more advanced practices. Calm Abiding is ìthe oil in the lamp that steadies the primordial flame of awareness ó the very nature of the mind.î \n 1871 N. King StreetTucson\, Arizona 85749 (Click here for a map)

SUMMARY:The 100\,000 Songs of Milarepa
DESCRIPTION:For Tibetans\, The 100\,000 Songs of Milarepa is comparable in status to the Hindu Mahabharata and the Christian Bible. Its author\, Milarepa\, is the most well-known Dharma Practitioner of all time\, and he is revered throughout Tibet and India for his unsurpassed spiritual attainment in just one lifetime.Milarepa lived during the eleventh century as a cotton (repa)-clad yogin. He avoided the scholarly institutions of his time and wandered from village to village\, teaching and demonstrating the path to Buddhahood through his spontaneously composed songs (dohas). Everywhere he went\, crowds of people gathered to hear his sweet-sounding voice ìsinging the Dharma.î \nHis songs are filled with powerful\, crystal clear advice for practitioners as well as stories of the miraculous\, and they present immeasurable insight into the living tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and its profoundly transformative practice. \nHis Eminence Garchen Rinpocheís teachings on Milarepaís Songs are unsurpassed\, and we are grateful beyond measure for his gift of these teachings.\nLunch with His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche\nIn conjunction with His Eminence Garchen Rinpocheís teachings on Milarepa on November 30\, December 1\, and December 2\, catered lunches will be held at the Benedictine Monastery for those in attendance at the teachings.\nThe cost for each luncheon is $15 per person. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options will be available. They will be held in the same room as the teachings\, in the back of the teaching hall. Reservations for the lunch(es) will be on a first come\, first serve basis\, with preference given to those attending the teachings. If you are not attending the teachings\, but would still like to attend the lunches\, please call Zehra to confirm space availability.\nPlease reserve your seat\, make your check out to Drikung Namgyal Ling\, and mail it with the form (link) below to Zehra Conner no later than November 15\, 2007. We are striving for an exact reservation count for the caterers prior to the dates of the lunches. SUMMARY:The Life and Teachings of Lord Jigten Sumgon
DESCRIPTION:Who was The Great Drikungpa\, Ratnashri\, Lord Jigten Sumgon? His coming was predicted in many sutras\, tantras\, and termas. There were many miraculous signs of his birth. His successorship as the head of the Drikung Kagyu lineage was predicted by his teacher\, Phagmodrupa\, who was a heart disciple of Gampopa. Hundreds of thousands of students gathered to hear his teachings. He authored many classic texts\, including the Gong Chik and The Heart Essence of the Mahayana Teachings (Thegchen Tanpa’i Nyingpo)\, as well as many vajra songs.\nWe are blessed to have Traga Rinpoche here so soon after his 5-month retreat to instruct us on Lord Jigten Sumgon’s Life and Teachings. SUMMARY:Contemplation on How the Fruits of Practice are Obtained
DESCRIPTION:Based on negative emotions\, we engage in actions (karma) of body\, speech\, and mind that give rise to suffering in our lives\, just as planting a seed gives rise to fruit in the future. In Buddhism\, suffering is not seen as “punishment” for bad deeds\, but simply a natural process of cause and effect. Deeds based on attachment\, aggression and ignorance naturally give rise to suffering\, while deeds based on a mind of non-attachment\, non-aggression\, and wisdom naturally bring happiness into our lives. This process continues from one life to the next\, through the process of Rebirth. Though the body ceases to exist at death\, the mind continues into a future existence\, and carries the seeds (which ultimately bear the fruits of practice) of karma into the next life.\nThis special weekend teaching by the Venerable Nyima Gyaltsen Rinpoche will discuss how the fruits of Buddhist practice are obtained. \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:Mandala Practice: A Hands-on Approach to Ultimate Generosity
DESCRIPTION:Mandala Practice is part of the Preliminary Practices (Refuge\, Vajrasattva\, Mandala\, Guru Yoga) and focuses on generosity. Mandala practice is a means of developing generosity by cutting through attachment and desire. In the Mandala Practice\, we visualize offering the entire universe to all the Buddhas and Bodhisatvas\, the Dharma and the Sangha. \nAll of the wealth of the universe is symbolized by the rice held in our hands. We visualize the rice as every jewel and precious stone\, and offer it (generosity) to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas\, the Dharma and the Sangha. \nDrupon Rinpoche will lead a 1 and 1/2 day teaching on the meaning and application of the Mandala\, including instruction on its creation. \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:Discovering Our Buddha Nature
DESCRIPTION:All sentient beings\, without exception have buddha nature\, the inherent purity and perfection of the mind\, untouched by changing mental states. Thus there is neither any reason for conceit in deeming oneself better than others\, nor any reason for self-contempt\, thinking of oneself as inferior and unable to reach enlightenment. This seeing is obscured by veils which are removable and do not touch the inherent purity and perfection of the nature of the mind.\nKhenpo Yeshi will be teaching from Buddha Nature\, The Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra\, by by Arya Maitreya (commentary by Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye and explanations by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche). Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the teaching.\nKhenpo Yeshi Rinpoche will teach on the fundamental discovery of our buddha nature\, and help us realize the teachings on the essence and source of buddhahood.\n\nA Lama Chopa meditation practice will precede each day’s teaching. This one-hour practice\, let by Khenpo Yeshi\, is a complete meditation for purifying the four obscurations through receiving the four empowerments of transforming one’s body\, speech\, and mind into the pure enlightened state.\n \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:The Four Thoughts That Turn The Mind
DESCRIPTION:The Four Thoughts That Turn the Mind is the fundamental basis of all Buddhist practice.\nThe first thought – our reflection on precious human birth\, gives us insight into the great fortune of our human incarnation and the opportunity it provides to study and practice the Dharma.Secondly\, impermanence and the inevitability of death help us to appreciate that this unique opportunity is transient and therefore especially precious.\nThirdly\, karma and its effects govern our lives and rebirth.\nLastly\, the pervasiveness of suffering in samsara (this existence) is a fundamental truth that we must all grasp in order to spiritually grow and ultimately gain enlightenment.\n\nDrupon Rinchen Dorje Rinpoche is visiting us from Chicago Ratna Shri\, and will deliver a precious two-day teaching on The Four Thoughts That Turn The Mind.\n \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:Natural Liberation: Padmasambhava's Teachings on the Six Bardos
DESCRIPTION:Event Day and TimesFridays\, 1/30 and 2/6\, 7-9pm\nSaturdays/Sundays\, 1/31-2/1 and 2/7-8\, 9am-5pm \nNatural Liberation\, Padmasambhava’s Teachings on the Six Bardos provide extensive instruction on each of the six transitional processes\, or bardos\, that make up our experience in samsara.\nThese teachings contain methods for naturally\, or spontaneously\, liberating ourselves from the sufferings that are inherent in each of the six realms so we can obtain ultimate liberation.\n\n“The transitional process from the time we are born until the time we die is crucial in determining whether we will go up or down.”\n“With a human incarnation\, we possess greater power than other beings to bring about good\, but also greater power to bring about bad. We have the ability to know and to understand\, and we must make best use of the favorable conditions of a human incarnation.”\n“We must not meaninglessly waste this opportunity. If we conduct ourselves well in\nour life\, then later\, as we approach death (in the Bardo)\, and in our next life\, we will go further and further up. There is no doubt about this.”\n“Otherwise\, we will suffer great fear and pain as we die\, our minds will suffer agony and despair\, and (due to our ignorance) we will not recognize the Bardo of Becoming. The purpose of the Six Bardos teachings is to profoundly move us to engage in practice during the Bardo of Living.”\nTraga Rinpoche\n\nOf all the methods taught by Buddha Shakyamuni to achieve enlightenment\, the methods of Mahamudra and Dzogchen provide us the most profound view – that of the mind’s true nature. Traga Rinpoche will also present an overview of these two methods and clarify for us the differences and similarities inherent in them.\n\nAn excellent book on these teachings is Natural Liberation: Padmasambhava’s Teachings on the Six Bardos\, with commentary by Gyatrul Rinpoche and translation by B. Alan Wallace (Wisdom Publications\, 1997).\n\nWe are once again very fortunate to be receiving these profound teachings from The Venerable Traga Rinpoche.\n \n\n1871 N. SUMMARY:The Meaning of Empowerments
DESCRIPTION:Most deity yoga practices require that practitioners receive an initiation or empowerment prior to doing the practice. The empowerment ritual confers authority upon the practitioner to engage in the practice of the particular deity for which the empowerment is given. There are four stages to the empowerment ritual: the vase empowerment\, which purifies the obscurations of the body; the secret empowerment\, which purifies the obscurations of speech; the knowledge or wisdom empowerment\, which purifies our mental obscurations; and the word empowerment\, which purifies the subtle habitual tendencies which give rise to dualistic perception.\nGape Lama will teach us about the meaning of empowerment and how empowerments can help us transform our ordinary\, habitual tendencies into enlightened activity. This will be a good introduction to the White Tara Empowerment which he will be bestowing on Friday night\, March 20th.\n\nGape Lama will also be leading White Tara Practice on Wednesday night\, March 18th at 7:30pm at Little Chapel of All Nations\, 1401 E. First Street\, Tucson.\n \n\nMatthew and Rachel’s House\n3935 North Country Club Road\, #36A\nTucson\, Arizona 85716\n(Click here for a map)\nDirections (Central Tucson)\nï N on Country Club Rd past Grant\, Ft.Lowell and Prince Rds\nï Left at Racquet Club Ranch #3935\, before Tucson Racquet & Fitness\nï Pass 1st drive on right. SUMMARY:Amitabha Empowerment and Teaching
DESCRIPTION:This Amitabha empowerment and teaching is being held in conjunction with the center’s spiritual director\, Khenpo Sherab Ozer Rinpoche and his recent worldwide mantra accumulation efforts – along with the nuns of Samten Choling Nunnery in Eastern Tibet. The intention of this great accumulation of mantras\, is to help ease the suffering of all sentient beings who have recently passed away and may be wandering and/or suffering in the intermediate state between death and re-birth. Buddha Amitabha is an historical buddha from another era. He made special aspiration that he would accomplish bodhicitta and benefit all sentient beings. In particular he focused on his pure land called Dewachen and said even those who have not achieved bhumis can be reborn in my pure land. They can make this connection simply by hearing my name and developing devotion.\nLocation\n1871 N.
