SUMMARY:Amitayus Long Life Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Being born as a human being is considered extremely precious\, as it is the best platform for spiritual practice. Only humans have the right amount of suffering ó our inspiration toward religion ó and the leisure with which to pursue that path. The human birth\, used correctly\, becomes a tool that benefits both self and all others. Through relying on Buddha Amitayus\, we can be protected from untimely death and increase our life span\, allowing us to make full use of the opportunity now at hand\, i.e.\, our human body. Moreover\, the practice of Amitayus itself becomes a means to make meaningful this human existence. \n Amitayus practice is traditionally done at the beginning of the preliminary practices (Ngˆndro)\, as insurance that the practitioner will live to complete their full commitment. It is also accumulated at the start of any long retreat. This particular Amitayus practice\, called Drupay Gyalmoís Longevity Practice\, is an important practice for the Drikung lineage\, which traces it to a great Indian dakini (Machik Drupay Gyalmo) who taught it to Rechungpa (one of Milarepaís main disciples). This is a wonderful opportunity for practitioners to practice together in a traditional\, intensive and intimate retreat setting with an accomplished master. \n This five-day closed retreat is our first annual fall retreat\, and registration is limited to 15 persons. Led by Drupˆn Thinley Nyingpo Rinpoche\, this retreat will be held in the tranquil high-desert surrounds of Patagonia\, Arizona\, one hour south of Tucson. The retreat will begin on Friday evening with an empowerment ceremony\, and be followed by five full days of meditation and instruction. As this retreat is closed\, pre-registration is required\, and attendees will need to remain on-site throughout the retreat.\n \n\n(Click here to download a teaching flyer.)

SUMMARY:Refuge and Prostration Practice Instruction
DESCRIPTION:Refuge is considered the foundation of the path to liberation\, the basis of all vows\, the source of all enlightened qualities and the point of differentiation between buddhists and non-buddhists. Together with generating Bodhichitta\, it forms the foundation for accomplishing the level of complete enlightenment and the source of all that is positive in existence and peace. \n Prostration (in the Tibetan spiritual sense) signifies respect and compassion for all sentient beings. It helps purify one’s negative past and present karma and creates positive merit. When one practices prostrations\, they lose nothing but their ego attachment. The bigger the ego – the more suffering. The lesser the ego – the less suffering one has. \nThe Venerable Traga Rinpoche from Garchen Buddhist Institute in Chino Valley Arizona\, will be providing instruction on refuge and prostration practice in this two-day teaching. \n\n St. Markís Presbyterian Church 3809 East 3rd Street Tucson\, Arizona 85716 (Click here for a map)

Please see the new venue details below.\n\nThis retreat is based on the text “Introduction to Mahamudra the Co-emergent Unification” by Lord Jigten Sumgon. The text is considered the amalgalmation of the entire gamut of essential instructions of Buddha’s teachings of sutra and tantra.\nMahamudra is a Sanskrit word that refers to both the nature of all phenomena\, and the Buddhist system of meditation to help practitioners realize this nature. By realizing the nature of reality we are able to dispel our own confusion\, thus being in a position to be of most help to others.\nThis three-day retreat will focus on the Mahamudra Practice and is limited to existing students of Khenpo Sherab Ozer Rinpoche. Participants are required to attend all three days of this retreat.\nRetreat Fee: $100 (Vegetarian lunch included) \n\n 1871 N. King Street\nTucson\, Arizona 85749\n(Click here for a map)

SUMMARY:Chandrakirti's Introduction to the Middle Way
DESCRIPTION:Chandrakirti’s Madhyamakavatara (Introduction to the Middle Way) is an extremely influential text of Mahayana Buddhism. It is an introduction to the Madhyamika (middleway) teachings of Nargarjuna\, which are themselves a systematization of the Perfection of Wisdom literature\, the sutras on the crucial but elusive concept of emptiness. Chandrakirti is one of several Indian scholars whose treatises were brought to Tibet and whose realized teachings about the nature of the mind are the foundation of Tibetan Buddhist thought. Hidden in his verses are the guideposts to enlightenment. The Madhyamakavatara\, Chandrakirti’s Entering the Middle Way\, is one of the key philosophical expositions of emptiness\, and its study has been an essential part of Buddhist training in Tibet for many centuries. Though not very long\, the text contains complex and subtle arguments in a condensed form. Study of this text leads to an understanding of great compassion and how it serves as a cause for generating the mind of enlightenment(bodhichitta). This text also sets out the various levels through which one proceeds to the attainment of the completion of all ten perfections and enlightenment. \n Tucson Odd Fellows Hall 1150 N. SUMMARY:Introduction to Mahamudra: The Co-Emergent Unification
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Mahamudra the Co-emergent Unification by Lord Jigten Sumgon is considered the amalgalmation of the entire gamut of essential instructions of Buddha’s teachings of sutra and tantra. Lord Sumgon founded the Drigung Kagyu order of Tibetan Buddhism in the twelfth century and taught the Dharma of the three vehicles extensively for forty years. Lord Sumgon had more than a hundred thousand disciples at a time\, and as the famous saying goes\, “the mountains are filled with Drigung practitioners and the plains are filled with Drigung patrons.” His teachings\, coming from his own experience\, are well known for their clarity and precision. This is the second year in a row that we will be the fortunate recipients of H.E. Garchen Rinpoche’s wisdom and instruction. \n St. Markís Presbyterian Church 3809 East Third Street Tucson\, Arizona 85716 (Click here for a map) \n\n (Click here to download a teaching flyer.) \n(Click here to download a Lunch with the Lama reservation form.) \n(Click here to pre-register.)

SUMMARY:Loving Kindness\, Compassion\, and Bodhicitta
DESCRIPTION:ìWe begin the spiritual path by cultivating a strong mind wishing to achieve enlightenment for the sake of others; that mind is bodhicitta. Without it – all meditation practices are futile; with it- the eventual attainment of enlightenment is certain. The only way to develop loving-kindness\, compassion\, and bodhicitta is through deep concern for sentient beings; if they did not exist\, love would remain a mystery. Thus\, it is clear that oneís own enlightenment depends on other sentient beings; without them to cherish\, one can make no progress on the path.î\n – Khenchen Gyaltsen Rinpoche\nAfter an absence of almost five years\, Khenchen Gyaltsen Rinpoche will be returning to his students in Tucson. It is very rare to meet a Lama with such extensive training in Buddhist philosophy and such profound meditation experience. In addition\, Rinpoche’s complete fluency in English makes him exceptionally capable of communicating the profound meaning of the teachings.\n(Click here to download a teaching flyer) \n\nEmbassy Suites Hotel\n5335 E.
